Everyone mourns in their own way, I guess

Even the Lusty Lady. Always topical.

It's a rough life

It's a rough life

While I'm working on a project housed at Microsoft's new campus, I'm able to look around a bit and experience what my work environment is going to be like a little early. (Our group moves later in July.)

It's a weird mix of office life, and the real world. In our current building everyone has offices. There are long stretches of hallway. There's a nice little cafeteria with a variety of food choices. I've had little reason to complain, except maybe for the parking.

The new campus is a bit different. I'm not sure if it's the basketball courts or soccer field. Maybe it's the huge outdoor patios. Could be that I just had lunch in a 50's diner setting. (It's upstairs in The Mixer, next door to Steamers.) It might be the 4 story glass atrium in the center of each building, with an interactive LED light "waterfall" sculpture. Perhaps it's that there are few offices, and everyone works in open, collaborative spaces with wide walkways and sitting areas between everything.

I'm gonna bet it's the new signs for the kitchenettes. They have little coffee cups on them. They're pretty sweet.

Upcoming new digs

It's been a movin' kind of summer! We have entirely too much to tell about the house, of course. We've done so much, and we still have a ton to do!

At work, I'm moving, as well. The LIVE group is moving over to Microsoft's newest buildings, The Studios. The project I'm working on right now lives in one of the studios, and I'm getting a peek at life over here. Not bad! Things are going to be different, that's for sure. But I think it's gonna be good!

This photo is the view from one of the Hubs (lounge/hallway) where I was camping out on Thursday. We could do worse.

It's watching you

A moment from right after our move. I set a pair of new lightbulbs on top of Kat's new dining room lamp, ready for when I'd have a few extra minutes to swap them in. It looked a little like a muppet. :)

EVERYTHING! ALL AT ONCE!

Sean's ankle surgery on Monday went well. We're hearing from the doctor (one of many, mind you) that maybe he'll be out of the hospital much sooner than previously thought. Of course, that was the ankle doctor; who knows if he was even aware of the hip and knee damage on the other leg. Some doctors are very narrowly visioned.

When Sean gets out of the hospital, during his recovery time he'll likely be living with us in the house. This is mostly because we have a single floor, and close proximity to the hospital for physical therapy follow-ups. And Kat will be off for the summer in a couple weeks and will be around to take care of him. With word that his release may happen sooner, this has pushed the "house schedule" into rapid overdrive, and we're realizing we're nowhere near prepared. (Actually, we're pretty near prepared, but it feels like we aren't. Deadlines being pushed forward have a habit of doing that.)

At the end of last week, I got a call from our mortgage guy letting me know that the roofers needed to know what color roof we wanted put on the house, and nothing could proceed without that bit of information. I called the roofers on Monday and left a message letting them know what we wanted, expecting to hear back from them about needing to schedule this or that, and it'd be this long, blah, blah, blah. The voice mail I got back said we were scheduled to start Wednesday. Suddenly, something I was expecting to happen later in the summer was happening in two days. Then, while I was at Home Depot yesterday evening, I got another call from the roofers letting me know that they had the color available, and things had gone well that day and we were moved up to Tuesday. As in tomorrow (at the time). As in today (right now). So now there's a dump truck sitting in my driveway. And I think a flatbed truck covered in shingles just pulled up.

Did I mention I just got a call from the property management company for the condo a few minutes ago? We need to repaint. I have to go hide under a rock.

What's up with Sean?

Lorraine has started a blog to keep notes about what's going on with Sean, so that people can keep up with where he's at. It's at http://www.waseankelly.blogspot.com/. Also, you can email him from this page. Volunteers print out the emails and hand deliver them to patients daily. Sean would really appreciate a little note of support.

He's had, or is in surgery right now, as far as I know. It should be done soon, and I hope to hear from Kat or Lorraine on how it went. I'll be keeping an eye on the blog. :)

Lawnmower gnomes?

Yesterday, on arriving home from work, I pulled up to the house and thought to myself that the grass by the sidewalk seemed shorter than I remembered. As I walked up to the door, I found a flowering plant and a card sitting on the front porch. During the day, Brian and Patsy had come over and mowed our front lawn, and left us a note letting us know that they were thinking about us. When I called Patsy to thank her for the gifts, she said they figured we had enough on our minds already. This was especially sweet because right now they have their own things to deal with, and they were still worrying about us.

Thanks, Cadwells. You guys are great friends, and we're glad we've moved into your neighborhood.
